ARTICLE: Voters Have Had Enough

In this article from timesunion.com, the author shares his perspective on the “political earthquake” caused by voters’ vehement rejection of five out of six propositions on the special election ballot. He says that this event may reflect how voters will handle the budget crisis that will soon face the United States as a whole.

Defeat of Prop. 1A Is a Win for Business

The phrase "feeding the alligators" is a metaphor about the dangers of appeasement. One may be able to buy temporary peace by feeding a threatening alligator, but the problem is that the alligator will, sooner or later, get hungry again. And because it was previously fed, it is now larger and more dangerous. Read more >>

To Get His Way, The Governor Issues Threats

Polls show that the revenue shifts and tax increases contained in the six measures placed on the May 19th Special Election ballot by the Legislature and governor are not going over well with voters. Californians are angry. They are already paying the highest taxes in the nation and are in no mood to increase taxes at a time when they risk losing their own savings, jobs and homes. Read more >>

Proponents Give Best Reasons Why Prop. 1A Should Be Rejected

In true David versus Goliath fashion, the opponents of Proposition 1A are the underdogs in the political battle which will culminate on May 19th. There is little doubt that they will be outspent by a margin of at least 15 to 1. And they face a well organized campaign machine financed by the two giants of California politics: the California Teachers Association and Governor Schwarzenegger's California Dream Team. Read more >>

ARTICLE: Fat Public Sector Sickens California

In this article, George Will from The Washington Post describes how California's budget crisis results not from the state or even nation wide economic conditions, but from the severely ingrown California Legislature. However, Will proposes that the upcoming election ballot is the chance for Californians to push back and to reestablish themselves in California's political process. This is a must-read for those planning to vote on May 19.

NFIB Poll of Over 21,000 Members Comes Out Against 1A

The National Federation of Independent Business - California, a major player in California politics, and the hands-down grassroots representative in Sacramento for small business owners, has come out strongly against Proposition 1A.

According to the NFIB/CA, In order to determine support or opposition to Proposition 1A, they balloted more than 21,000 members during the month of April. Of those who responded, the majority were in opposition to Proposition 1A. The content of the ballot was developed based on information provided by both the support and opposition committees. Read more >>

If Californians are among the highest-taxed citizens in the U.S., why is California one of the states most in debt in the U.S.? This article in the Taft Independent tracks the excessive spending of the state government and explains how more taxes are not what California needs.

Though polling has shown low levels of public support for propositions on the special election ballot, Governor Schwarzenegger has increased his fundraising efforts with hopes to sway the public opinion. This article in the Santa Cruz Sentinel (which quotes HJTA President Jon Coupal) discusses the special election campaign budget and the likelihood for the propositions to pass.
