With California’s gas prices being among the highest in the nation, lawmakers started asking questions after the California Energy Commission found an unexplained surcharge in September 2017, costing Californians over $17 billion since February 2017. A week ago, nineteen Democrat lawmakers sent a letter to Attorney General Xavier Becerra asking for an investigation of the matter. A spokesperson for the Western States Petroleum Association responded that it was a matter of supply and demand, citing higher production costs, cap-and-trade, and the Low Carbon Fuel Standard.
