Citing an outdated 911 emergency services system, Governor Jerry Brown wants to increase taxes on all devices capable of dialing 911, reports Taryn Luna of the Sacramento Bee. The tax would come in the form of a monthly rate of 34 cents per line, generating $175.4 million in revenue in the first year, with the possibility of increasing to $400 million in later years. The new tax rate would be determined every October, and could range from 20 to 80 cents per line.
