Over 400,000 people have now received calls from con artists claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service and demanding payment, reports NBC Southern California. Over $15.5 million has been lost to this scam, which the US Treasury Department calls its biggest case of impersonation fraud yet. IRS officials urge taxpayers to be aware that they will never call to demand immediate payment without first mailing a notice, will not ask for credit card of debit card numbers and will not threaten police action.
