California has a high cost of living and State Assembly Republican leader Chad Mayes speaks the truth when he says that California’s poverty rates are the highest in the nation when you account for how much people have to pay to live in the state. Without factoring in cost of living, California had the 17th highest poverty rate in America, at 15%, from 2013-2015. But when you factor in cost of living, during that same period, California owns the highest poverty rate in America.
