While state government employees are limited to no more than 80 days of accumulated vacation time, some have accumulated as much as two years’ worth, resulting in huge payoffs upon retirement, writes Adam B. Summers in the Orange County Register. The accumulation of vacation time by state employees now amounts to a $3.9 billion liability for taxpayers and serves as a testament to the power of government employee unions. One way to solve the problem would be to implement a “use it or lose it” policy on vacation time.
