A recent report from the Legislative Analyst’s Office reveals Californians pay over $2 billion a year in hidden gas taxes, writes Senator Patricia Bates in the San Diego Union Tribune. The tax is hidden because it is imposed on fuel producers before being passed on to consumers, where it is not disclosed at the pump. While consumers may expect the tax to be used to improve roads, the funds generated actually are directed to politicians’ pet projects such as high speed rail.
