Sacramento — Governor Jerry Brown has signed Assembly Bill 809 by Assemblyman Jay Obernolte (R—Big Bear). Sponsored by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association, this bill provides crucial information to voters regarding local tax measures. AB 809 states that the rate and duration of a local tax measure, as well as the amount of estimated revenue to be raised, will be placed on the ballot label for voters to review. The ballot label, a short description of the measure, is typically the last thing voters see before voting.
“Assemblyman Obernolte’s bill is a common-sense proposal that will give voters easily accessible information regarding the impact of local tax increases,” said former HJTA Legislative Director David Wolfe. “Voters need to be able to make an accurate decision regarding all initiative measures placed before them. This is especially true for tax measures that could last decades.”
